Students establish industry connections which not only create employment opportunities for the students, but it also puts a school on the radar of important donors and corporate partners.

More importantly, countless students get to spend our workshops and hackathon weekend having fun, meeting new people, and preparing themselves for technical careers. Hackathons provide a real-world experience for students, as they compete in teams to create a product. Similar to the product cycles of a startup company, hackathon teams quickly transition from the idea stage to the final product.

Students have a chance to gain time management skills, along with technical expertise and new connections. In addition, students get to spend one-on-one time with expert mentors who spend the hackathon teaching students new technical skills and helping students with their projects.

Major League Hacking

Major League Hacking (MLH) is the official student hackathon league. Each year, they power over 200 weekend-long invention competitions that inspire innovation, cultivate communities and teach computer science skills to more than 65,000 students around the world.

GitHub created the GitHub Student Developer Pack to give student hackers at all MLH events free access to the best developer tools in one place so they can learn by doing.

AWS’ partnership with MLH ensures that every hacker gets $100 in free AWS hosting credit so hackers can deploy their apps for free! We also award a prize for the Best Use of AWS at each hackathon across the season!

BCS are the Chartered Institute for IT in the UK. They play an important part in computer science education, particularly at Keele University where single honours computer science is BCS certified, and personal professional development.
